GOAL

Design a platform that can be used for every step of allergy testing & treatment. Provide an ironclad management process and straightforward multi-location and multi-patient management system.

FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE

This is the first step to creating a compelling UI. It is essential to understand what the product offers, it’s roadmap, business drivers, competition, and users. Services provided for this project included: Stakeholder Interviews, User Research, Observations, User Interviews & Competitive Analysis.

OBSERVATIONS & CUSTOMER INTERVIEWS

User observations are crucial because they let us witness firsthand how end users work with a product while in their natural habitat. The observations let us see the entire user experience while gaining insight into the users’ unstated needs and observing other inefficiencies that may be improved upon during the design process.

OBSERVATION OBJECTIVES

Understand User Behavior

  • Witness how users interact with software in the real world

  • Task frequency and complexity

  • Workflow

  • Patterns,
    work-arounds

  • Work environment

Identify User Preferences

  • Features

  • Utility vs. clutter

  • General vs.
    task-tailored

  • Existing vs. Ideal

Feature Exploration

  • Gain insight into how to reorganize features

  • Prioritize features

  • Where can we enhance the experience?

  • What new features can be added?

METHODOLOGY

  • Visited two locations

    • Cape Fear Otolaryngology

    • Lake Mary Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy

  • Observed key tasks and scenarios

    • Patient check-in

    • Allergy testing

    • Patient treatment shots

    • Prescription mixing

  • One-on-one discussions with:

    • Doctors

    • Nurses

    • Front Staff

  • Daily activity topics discussed:

    • Process

    • Workflow

    • Pain points

REVIEWED DOCUMENTATION

  • Forms being used in the field today

    • Patient

    • Testing

    • Prescriptions

  • Read the PowerPoint presentation and watched the videos created by otolaryngologists Dr. Damask

RESEARCH & OBSERVATION FINDINGS

Allergy Testing

  • Most paperwork is completed before appointment

  • Testing takes 2 hours

  • Large opportunities for mistakes while recording results

Mixing

  • Mixing prescriptions is a tedious procedure

  • Many chances for error to occur while mixing

Prescriptions

  • Doctors spend too much time reviewing and checking tests that were done by their nurses

  • A lot of time is spent creating prescriptions for patients

CONCEPTS

Based on a products needs and a defined set of experience priorities, concepts are developed around task flow, navigation, and screen layout. The concepts cover the primary use cases so that we can see how the system will behave at a macro level. Services provided for this project included: creating a Mind Map to organize user activities with the software, a System Process Flow and multiple rounds of Concept Wireframes.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

  • Design a modern, touch-friendly interface

  • Create a seamless responsive design for desktop and tablet

  • Provide an easy way for allergy test results to be recorded

  • Automate the calculation of dilutions and prescriptions

  • Minimize chances of error

  • Explore ways to make patient check-in more integrated

MIND MAP

Mind mapping was used to help organize all of the user activities that could take place in the software.

  • Functional categories:

    • Patient management

    • Allergy testing

    • Prescription approvals

    • Prescription mixing

    • System setup

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Friendly Wizard Based Design

  • Support for different user types

  • Designed with touch-screens in mind

  • Simple automated workflows

  • Clear guided instructions

Minimize Manual Work

  • System calculations

  • One click prescription approvals

Digitize And Track Patient Data

  • Demographics

  • Test results

  • Prescriptions

  • Shot schedules

CONCEPT WIREFRAME SAMPLES

INTERACTION DESIGN

This stage is where the concepts become reality. While adhering to technical restraints, ISO and industry-specific guidelines an experience is crafted which is both usable and complaint. All features and functionality will be documented in detailed wireframes that help ease the transition from product definition to development. Services provided for this project included: Detailed Design Wireframes
