Cataract Surgery Equipment - Touchscreen UI

Designed a live video touchscreen UI to assist surgeons and their nurses with cataract surgery. This provided live video feedback during surgery and allowed the surgeon or nurse to make quick and accurate adjustments to the surgery equipment during a procedure.

PROBLEM

The operating screen UI was cluttered with controls making it hard for users to make quick procedure adjustments and focus on the important operating parameters during surgeries.

FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE

This is the first step to creating a compelling UI. It is essential to understand what the product offers, it’s roadmap, business drivers, competition, and users. Services provided for this project included: Heuristic Analysis, Stakeholder Interviews, User Research, User Interviews, On-Site Observations, & Competitive Analysis.

HEURISTIC ANALYSIS

Evaluating the current product to asses its overall usability. The end result gives insight on areas that work well and those which need improvement.

OBSERVATIONS & CUSTOMER INTERVIEWS

User observations are crucial because they let us witness firsthand how end users work with a product while in their natural habitat. The observations let us see the entire user experience while gaining insight into the users’ unstated needs and observing other inefficiencies that may be improved upon during the design process

Experience Flow

Research & Observation Findings

  • Operative screen is cluttered with unused options

  • Program Selection usability is good but can be more welcoming

  • Setup experience can be improved by guiding the users through the setup process

  • Overall aesthetics can be improved and modernized

CONCEPTS

Based on a products needs and a defined set of experience priorities, concepts are developed around task flow, navigation, and screen layout. The concepts cover the primary use cases so that we can see how the system will behave at a macro level. Services provided for this project included: Concept Wireframes

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

  • Streamline the operating screen and draw focus to important elements

  • Identify different ways to visualize parameters and how to indicate the current mode

  • Make it clear what the foot switch is controlling

  • Evaluate the use of portrait orientation or a video based layout

  • Explore a “modeless” concept

VISUAL DESIGN

During the visual design phase artwork and graphics are applied to the design. Clarity and meaning are brought to the user experience by carefully crafting visual themes, color schemes, typography, and icons. Services provided for this project included creating: Visual Theme Exploration, Screen Renderings, Graphical Interface Elements, Icon Designs, and Style Guides.

USABILITY EVALUATION

Having users validate the product while in the design stage will help vet any key decisions made before effort is spent on the final designs. From informal feedback sessions with customers and stakeholders, to formal testing across wide demographics , we can identify sources of confusion, measure task times and judge how users respond to layout and navigation. Services provided for this project included creating: Testing Protocols, Lo-Fi Prototype and Testing Discussion Guide.
